Safe Use & Handling

Product Safety Information

Our fertiliser products are designed for safe use when handled according to the instructions provided. They are generally considered to be of low acute toxicity, and under normal use conditions, adverse health effects are not anticipated.

However, as with all fertiliser products, prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause mild irritation, and eye contact may result in temporary redness or discomfort. Inhalation of dust should be avoided, as it may cause irritation to the nose and throat.

If accidental exposure occurs:

  • Eyes – Rinse immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes.
  • Skin – Wash thoroughly with soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing.
  • Inhalation – Move to fresh air. Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.
  • Ingestion – Rinse mouth with water. Do not induce vomiting. Seek medical advice.

Hazard Identification

  • Not classified as hazardous according to Safe Work Australia criteria.
  • No signal words, pictograms, or hazard statements have been allocated.
  • Under normal handling and storage conditions, the product presents a low risk to health.
  • As with all fertiliser products, avoid creating or inhaling dust and minimise skin or eye contact.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

When handling fertiliser products, the following PPE is recommended:

  • Eye/Face Protection – Safety glasses with side shields to prevent dust entry.
  • Hands – Cotton gloves for general use, or impervious PVC/rubber gloves in high-risk situations.
  • Clothing – Long-sleeved shirts and trousers to minimise skin contact.
  • Respiratory – A dust mask (P2) where airborne dust is present, or a particulate filter respirator if dust levels are high and ventilation is inadequate.

Ensure PPE meets relevant Australian Standards and is used in accordance with manufacturer instructions. Wash hands and exposed skin after handling.

Handling & Storage

  • Read and follow all product label instructions before use.
  • Avoid eye and skin contact, and prevent inhalation of dust.
  • Store in a cool, dry, covered, and well-ventilated area.
  • Keep away from chemicals (including insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides) and foodstuffs.
  • Bagged fertilisers should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent packaging degradation.
  • If storing outdoors, limit to short periods and cover with a waterproof tarpaulin.
  • Stack bulk bags securely; if stacking more than two high, use a pyramidal pattern to ensure stability.
  • Avoid high stacking to minimise the risk of caking.
  • When handling bulk bags, use appropriate lifting equipment that meets Australian Standards.

Pests and Pets

  • Fertiliser products are not intended for consumption by animals.
  • Keep pets and livestock away from treated areas until the fertiliser has been watered in and the surface has dried.
  • Some animals may be attracted to the smell of fertiliser; ingestion in large amounts may cause gastrointestinal upset or other health issues.
  • If a pet or animal consumes fertiliser, contact a veterinarian immediately and provide details of the product and amount ingested.
  • Store all fertiliser products in sealed containers or original packaging to prevent access by animals and pests.

Accidental Release Measures

  • Avoid creating dust and prevent the product from entering drains, waterways, or soil outside the target area.
  • Sweep or shovel up spilled material and place into clean, dry containers for reuse where possible.
  • If contaminated with other substances, collect and dispose of according to local regulations.
  • Use protective equipment as described in the PPE section when cleaning up spills.

Fire Safety

  • Fertiliser products are non-flammable.
  • If involved in a fire, they may decompose and release small amounts of irritating or toxic gases.
  • Use an extinguishing method suitable for surrounding materials (e.g. water spray, foam, dry chemical, CO₂).
  • Firefighters should wear full protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus.

Stability & Reactivity

  • Stable under normal storage and handling conditions.
  • Avoid contact with strong acids, alkalis, or oxidising agents.
  • Thermal decomposition at high temperatures may release ammonia, nitrogen oxides, or other irritant gases.

Physical Description

  • Form: Granular solid
  • Odour: Slight, characteristic of fertilisers
  • Colour: Varies depending on product blend
  • Solubility: Partially soluble in water
  • Non-flammable and non-explosive under normal conditions

Environmental Information

  • Contains plant nutrients which, if released into waterways, may contribute to algal growth and eutrophication.
  • Prevent contamination of drains, rivers, and other bodies of water.
  • Avoid over-application to reduce the risk of nutrient runoff.

Disposal

  • Whenever possible, use the product for its intended purpose.
  • If degraded but uncontaminated, it may still be applied to soil for nutrient value.
  • If contaminated with harmful substances, dispose of in accordance with local regulations.
  • Do not dispose of into waterways, drains, or sewers.
