Summer Tips

Summer Lawn Care with ProLawnsAu

Summer is peak growing season for warm-season grasses across Australia. It’s also the time when your lawn cops the most punishment: scorching heat, backyard cricket, BBQ traffic, and the dog doing laps. With the right summer care, you can keep your grass green, tough, and looking sensational all season long.

Watering

In summer, less is often more. Instead of frequent sprinkles, go for deeper, less regular soakings. This trains your lawn’s roots to grow deeper and tougher, making it more resilient in dry spells. If you’re on the east coast and getting regular rain, you might not need to water much at all.

During heatwaves or long dry patches, aim for a solid soak once a week (as long as you’re following any local water restrictions). A deep watering keeps stress down and helps your lawn handle the heat.

Tip: Don’t waste rainfall. When a storm hits, make sure your lawn can drink it in. That’s where wetting agents come in handy, helping water soak down to the roots instead of running off. (Keep an eye out, ProLawnsAu has a summer-ready wetting agent coming soon).

Fertilising

Your lawn burns through nutrients faster in summer. To keep it healthy, feed it regularly with a balanced fertiliser. A good summer fertiliser boosts growth, strengthens roots, and helps your grass hold colour when the sun’s beating down.

ProLawnsAu’s Slip Slop Spread is built for exactly this, a premium summer fertiliser with the right NPK blend to keep your lawn green and grunt-proof through heat, drought, and backyard traffic. Water in after applying, and you’re sorted.

Mowing

Raise the bar, literally. In summer, mow your lawn a little higher to protect it from burning out. Keeping the blades longer reduces stress, shades the soil, and helps the grass hang on to moisture.

Rule of thumb: never cut off more than a third of the blade at once, and keep mower blades sharp. If you’ve got buffalo grass, don’t mow shorter than 25mm in the heat.

Weeds

Summer weeds love bare patches and short lawns. Stay on the front foot by mowing properly, keeping your lawn fed, and yanking weeds before they get established. The stronger and thicker your lawn, the less chance weeds have of muscling in.
